A Darebin councillor needs to represent the interests of all Darebin, but most of all the issues local to the ward.
I lived in North-West ward until 2024, and my children stayed at school in the ward when we moved. I also have a daughter in a local soccer club.
North West ward is a special corner of Darebin, with a lot of green space and large blocks protected by the Merrilands covenant. It hosts important community infrastructure like PRACE adult education centre and the Merrilands community centre, as well as Reservoir Primary School, William Ruthven School, Reservoir and Keon Park Soccer Clubs. North West ward is a less well served than the rest of Darebin in terms of public transport and there are some areas where traffic is congested or moving too fast to be safe for families. Air pollution from the VISY recycling plant is also a concern in this area.
If elected as your local councillor, my major priorities for North West ward will be to:
- Fix the Allenby avenue intersection which has numerous accidents
- Fight for funding for a Community Centre for Reservoir
- Control VISY pollution
- Clean up Edwards Lake and fix the boathouse
- Improve Ruthven station lighting and safety
- Stand against inappropriate development, and ensure development that does proceed is responsible.
